  1. Ha I've got that chaps book.
  2. Trouble with fungi is that they never read the books...
  3. I think QTRA has merit. Its just a systematic way of supporting your professional evaluation of trees and placing the risk of harm into a wider perspective. Its as "mathsy" (look Tim a neoglism!) as you want it to be... I've found the expression of failure potential in terms of 1/10,000 to be helpful with the public (on the rare occaison that the actually listen to me!!!)
  4. I'e just traded my TreeMagic in for one and I bloody love it! I'd tried to adjust the magic for nearly a year and it still pinched and crushed the jewels. The sequoia, on the other hand, was bang on after adjusting the bridge once. Love it. Talk about a light harness... It just ain't there!
  5. Ha! Unlikely indeed... and after a bit of proper research all but two of the British Mycological Society sightings have been on Oak!!! I still think that cracking is indicative of Phellinus though... Hows about Phellinus ignarius???
  6. The group came to the conclusion that it was Ganoderma pfeifferi. A mutant G. lucidium was one of the suggestions but then G. lucidium doesn't have a perennial fruiting body... The lighter was busted out and the resinous cuticle ran...
  7. Cheers Ross. Will do. Lets hope they fall on their saws.
  8. Here is a interesting little beast courtesy of my study group. Any guesses??
  9. I agree with raising an objection on the grounds that the tree is not suitable for protection by a TPO (if that is your assessment). It is a common misconception however that refusing consent to fell places liability on the LPA. IT IS NOT THE CASE. A TPO tree is still the responsibility of the tree owner not the LPA. If you consider the tree to be exempt from the TPO on the basis that it is dangerous... then it is dangerous NOW. Not next week when you can book it in. If you consider the tree to be so dangerous as to warrant immediate removal, then take it down. If not then raise an objection to the confirmation on the grounds that the tree is not suitable for a TPO. Should the TPO be confirmed. Apply for permission to fell. If refused then appeal to the secretary of state. An independent expert will determine your appeal. Do not give the homeowner the false hope that the LPA now have responsibilty for the tree.
  10. Phellinus robustus?? - does that funky cracking thing...
  11. I haven't got too many pictures - I was kind of hoping Alex or Nick would post a bunch. Heres the Oak in question...
  12. I think she's got the concept of "Best Value" confused with "Least Price".
  13. Email those photos to the chap in charge. Maybe even chuck in a link to this thread with us slating the shoddy spec/results. Andy Summerly tells a good story about the operatives from some landscape firm using a billhook to remove the roots before they spiked the rest of the tree into the ground... Their excuse??? The spec didn't say plant with the roots attached....
  14. Ok so maybe riduculous was a bit strong - It was a massive mature oak. Wider then it was tall. Very technical climb. John Turnbull went old school and used both ends of his rope and a few others used secondary lines. Some devious target planning there by Nod made for a good challenge.
  15. You're probably right, P. squamosus doesn't like to work hard IMO and will usually be found digesting nice discrete branch protection zones or branch pullout wound rather than rampant decay. So the suffocated root system entry court is probably bang on.
  16. Email I recieved today - "Over the weekend, the QTRA website was migrated to a new server and as a result, users are temporarily unable to access the Discussion List. This problem will be resolved over the next few days but in the meantime you will be able to post and receive messages by posting to [email protected] as usual. 17. I'd agree with P. squamosus. It loves the old sickys
  18. Nope, I wouldn't run a life line over a radius as small as that... but then that's not what's happening is it? It's designed to have a stopper knot run past it. It didn't used to concern me about tying a scaffold knot onto the petzl becket either... The line doesn't move its static.
  19. I used to run my VT like that until everyone who saw it started sucking air in over their teeth and shaking their head. I'm gonna buy one for sure.
  20. I'm so unfit. Great comp though - the masters tree was ridiculous! I'll leave a write up to people who had a better overview than myself but congrats to everyone who took part. Such a great laugh!
  21. *********s I thought it was sat-sun. oh dear
