Hobby planer/thicknesser

I'm after a small planer/thicknesser like this FOX F22-564-250 Woodworking 10" x 5" Planer Thicknesser Timber/Wood/Plank,240v | eBay.

 

It will only have occasional use so I can't/don't have the need or the funds for anything more professional. Anyone use something similar or have any views or opinions on this type of machine

I'm sure it will be fine and fit you requirements. I was looking at simular machines and ended up with a elu dah 176 which works grate. Take your time to set the machine up properly and you should get good results.

Hi, I looked at buying this machine and I'm sure it would do what's needed although I ended up with the Metabo HC260 which I thought was higher spec. but then I see that Fox also do more expensive models, that's the dilemma, isn't it ? cheers.

The metabo is a nice looking machine. £519 is the cheapest I can find it for and seems a good price, just more than I need to spend. Too much choice and too many machines that cost "just that little bit more". Dilemma alright

Had the Titan one from Screwfix for the last 2 years, not used it as a planer only the thicknesser, cuts to within 0.2 mm over a 1 meter length, cuts down to 6 mm thick. Only fault is that at this thickness it tends to clog up and could really do with extraction to clear the chips.

Without extraction your knee deep in chips in no time with any planer, when I got the Metabo it was a bit cheaper and it came with a wheels kit thrown in which swung it for me as that makes it easy to move about / store away, I take it outside to use it for that reason and get rid of any chips I can't sweep up with a leaf blower.

As tools go I'm happy with the quality of Metabo equipment, it's not through the roof in price and it's German engineering, but I can't criticise the Fox stuff as it looks good as well and the F22 568 model was the other one I nearly went for !

With every thing nowadays being online comparing the quality of the many choices is harder compare than if you could see them side by side.

Nothing wrong with any Titan stuff either at the price if but if a bit breaks ..no real support or parts ! I know that I normally decide what I can afford then....blow the budget

Yeah, A great machine, I had a look at them as my local Stihl dealer sells Scheppach equipment new and s/h but they're in the next league for sure, but if one could be had at the right price.......... cheers

search ebay for a good old machine, they are often going for very little money but if you have a bit more dosh then get a reconditioned one.

 

i got this one years ago for under £900 fully refurbished does 12" x 4 1/4" all solid cast iron. weighed about 4-5 hundred kilos...

I have the metabo hc260, doesnt get much use, but its a tidy little machine.
