Well after much deliberating, swaying back and forth between getting a Honda or other, I decided to risk it and bought myself a Evo420 14Hp engine. At £200 inc vat it's less than a third of the price of a GX390 so if it lasts a year or more, i'll be happy.

The fitting was very easy, as advertised it's been designed as a direct replacement for the Honda so mounting holes and drive are exactly the same.

It sounds sweet but its got a full day of grinding tomorrow so we'll see how it holds up.

 

I'll try to remember to update the thread in 6 months - hopefully with good news that cheaper engines are indeed a viable alternative.

The performance of the engine is still very good. There are, however, a few other niggly problems. The fuel tank cap does not fit well, so it leaks a bit when grinding deep or during a rough transit, the exhaust has fallen off a few times due to the cylinder/manifold studs rattling out and the pull cord has snapped once already.

 

Considering the engine costs less than £170, i can put up with a few small fixes.

I've just brought a 16hp Launtop will see how it goes. I had all the above problems with my honda engine before it seized. That was after the last one snapped the conrod....

Not a fan of Chinese engines or generators. But have had some success by very regular oil changes. Change oil after first day's work. I would then tend to change every 25 - 50 hrs running. The engines seem to drop a lot of shards and shavings especially in the first few hours.

is the Honda engine on 50 hr intervals as well

Yes, i was thinking of doing that when I get some spare time. I've already robbed a few things off the old engine - exhaust fume directional cap thingy and the oil drain pipe.

An update on the alternative to Honda situation - don't buy Chinese, at least not the Evo420, it didn't last 2 months. I hope that yours is doing a bit better Redmoosefaction.

 

I've had a Subaru engine on the machine for a few months now and can recommend these.
