Chainsaw Boots, The Regulations?

Chainsaw gloves and boots are totally over rated and over priced, £200 Chainsaw boots will give little extra protection compared to quality work boots at half the price but this country is so rapped up in health and safety blame culture we have to cover our arses all the time.

Couldn't agree more :thumbup1:

On a side not ive seen a video where a test was done on a pair of very popular chainsaw climbing boots. The boots in question offered practically no protection from a saw at full revs.

I completely understand your point.Seems to be the norm for boots to be more and more expensive but are falling apart within months.

Not good...

I think I've seen that video. Yeah stuff isn't built to last, Wesoc and AFAIK Whites will take your boots back and completely rebuild them as long as the leg part is intact, so a complete new sole, midsole and upper, can't see any of the chainsaw boot makers offering that.

I suppose the reality is that we get crap because we accept poor quality and put form (and a manufacturers logo) before function. Look at all the boots with multiple coloured panels, that just means they can use smaller cheaper sections of leather but they sell it as 'style'.

Give me a break

I've always understood (based on hearsay) that chainsaw protection in boots is pretty much pointless because the tight sandwich between outer leather and inner lining prevents the long fibres from being drawn out and binding the sprocket as should happen when saw trousers are caught with a moving chain. That said I wear them because I can't through the risk assessment process justify not doing. I currently have a pair of pfanner Tirol boots and they are proper boots, vibram sole screwed and stitched on. They've done a years graft and will be having a new sole shortly, no gimmicks no gore tex just waxed weekly and used to kick trees to bits!

Virtually no one wears chainsaw gloves do they ? I rarely have in 30 years .... The regulations on PPE only really matter if you are working for an organisation which is very pedantic about such matters or on a site which is the same ... or you try to claim for injury , I have had dozens of boots and trousers over the years and ( touch wood ) have never cut them , however I rarely work without them NOT just because of the regulations but of self preservation , they may not stop injury but will most certainly reduce its severity !! I think the quality of boots especially these days are great ( mostly ) and they get a lot of use / abuse over a year or so of work .

If a job demanded I wore chainsaw gloves I wouldn't be doing it.

The whole concept is idiotic.

Also, and because I'm my own boss, I won't be buying any more 'chainsaw' boots.

Salewas/AKU etc. are so much better for climbing, and Grisports are comfy, have caps and do me for all my groundwork.

I reckon I've spent about £3k on chainsaw boots over the years, and only ever scuffed the caps when I've been lazy and foot holding when logging.

£3k on bullshit.

Tell us how you really feel

I guess as I'm self employed and my wife graciously lets me think I'm the boss I could do as you do.......

Kinda sorry I mentioned gloves now, I'm almost expecting the Chainsaw Glove Inquisitors to arrive, unexpectedly
