We went to Belgium a few weeks ago and used the Euro tunnel. For the van it cost us £80 total regardless of how many people were in it. Takes approximately 30 minutes before you drive off. I was impressed to be fair. Don't rule it out Steve. Had we gone in the car it would have been a bit cheaper but not much. The French roads weren't too bad either in morning rush hour.

Oh and as mentioned, buy a pack of self breathalysers for France. Not a law anymore I believe but they do prefer you to have them and saves a lecture should you get stopped. £3-5 from halfrauds.

If you get as far as Croatia don't bother with the far south (Dubrovnik); it's not worth the journey for a Roman City 3 times the size of a football pitch!

But do some of the Dalmatian Coast then turn inland while still in the North and see the lakes at Plitvice. Surreal; they were the inspiration for the waterfall/lake scenery in Avatar. But get there early (8am opening) to avoid the coachloads (many).

After that Zagreb is 3 hours drive north east and the old city there is glorious.

Then home via Ljubljana!

 

There is a new motorway running down most of the country (Croatia) and is one of the most dramatic motorways in Europe with breath-taking views.

 

I can second Plitvice lakes and Krka National Park and falls. I enjoyed Dubrovnik but heyho:001_rolleyes:

 

The people are friendly and food European, lots of fish etc plus generally good value!

i would use the train. done it 4 times now 30 mins and your on the other side. Europe is then your oyster.

I do, have quite a lot actually so i'll look into that

The missus sorted it all out but I think we had vouchers or something and just used them when booking and the price was reduced.

 

I would drive down to the Bay of Biscay area. San Sebastien and Biaritz and Hossiger. Chilled surf areas with nice beaches and less of the hoity toity types who frequent the other side of the south of France.

Did that a couple years ago. Was nice...and yes if the weathers hot the UK has a lot to offer, but it still never gets quite hot enough to actually enjoy being in the ocean for any length of time without a wetsuit!

 

Just booked a flight to Cyprus, 35 degrees there at the moment
