Hi i'm buzz and i'm looking to find out where to buy a chainsaw and all the safety gear to with it for my chainsaw course in september. Is it advisable to buy a second hand chainsaw? off ebay??

ideally buy a new saw if you can stretch to it. failing that it could be safer to buy a saw from an arbtalk member through arbtrader, you're less likely to be diddled.

No . you will need at least 8 . This will become apparent when you pass your ticket

If your on a budget look at Echo or dolmar. Both cheaper than stihl or husky but just as good value for money. As to safety kit like saws on eBay are either in the large had it or not been paid for

Yeah lets not turn this into another brand debate please.

You can pick up some bargains on ebay mate,ive bought lots of kit of ebay and its all been in good nick.

Just make sure you only use people who have positive ratings.

I'm not interested in the brand debate just saying look further than the main 2 brands, I think it all comes down to your local dealer and what they offer. There will be bargains to be had on line second hand but wadeing through the rest of the tosh to find them takes time, I would rather spend my time earning money to buy new and know what I've got.

Or Forest & Arb or Honey Brothers, bought the majority of my kit inc saws from them. I also bought some of my kit on ebay 2nd hand at really low prices, my 1st harness still had the tags on and I bought an unmarked pair of Bashlins at less than 1/2 the cost new.

Genuinely a minefield really. I use a saw every day and I learn something everyday. It's just about experience. Everyone will have an opinion both good and bad, it's their opinion though. Good luck with your choice.
