Cops in America

I've read / seen stuff where it was suggested that you only need a background check at a licensed gun store, not at gun fairs and other. In one of the Michael Moore films he gets a rifle for opening a bank account - I got a porcelain pig.

And what does the back ground check entail exactly?

The simple fact is guns are being used by people to go into schools, kill people on the streets and attack police officers.

If you or anyone else thinks that this is acceptable you are deluded.

How many times has president Obama pleaded for gun laws to be reformed after yet another attack on the innocent people of America but has been rebuffed because the big gun companies in the states hold such an immence political power and influence.

As for purchasing firearms in the UK it is illegal and therefore more difficult to buy firearms over here than stateside,ok,anyone who is determined enough and who knows people who would sell firearms can purchase firearms but the point is its a hellava lot more difficult to obtain firearms if they are illegal rather than just someone walking into a shop, passing a background check and walking back onto the street armed and potentialy dangerous.

To compare UK gun laws to Americas is irrelevant,we havent had any mass shooting in a very long time as our politicians made it very difficult to purchase weapons in the UK.

The problem as i see it is Americans are so used to weapons and the ease at which they are purchased they genuinly dont see carrying a weapon or the use of a weapon as a big deal, its written into the 2nd ammendment, its seen as normal and that in my opinion is the problem.

You are deluded . It's not the big gun companies holding the government to ransom it's the members of the NRA ( decent law abiding people like you and me ) saying NO !! We will not have our rights and way of life stripped away because some shady weasel politician wants to control me even more !!!

Wouldnt it be fairer to put the gun law issue to a democratic vote rather than simpley denying the problem and denying the American citizens there right to have a say on the subject.

I find the fact that you say way of life,as in weapons are a way of life for americans very very scarey.

What about they people who die each year from gun crime?

What about theyre way of life ?what about theyre rights?

Your attitude is unfortunatly indemic to the american psyche and i think it stems from a culture that has evolved around weapons and there use.

That's the thing , when politicians strip them of their guns , they will have no say ( although them and their cronies will STILL carry them ).

What scares you about guns being a way of life ? You climb trees with a chainsaw lol !!! Maybe go take some Shooting lessons .. lo and behold the chances are you will meet normal law abiding , friendly people!

As a note I grew up only a few miles from Dunblane , I use to have your physce until I took the barriers down and tried to understand, research more about it.

No one's saying these events are none other than tragic..

Any tougher gun laws you bring into law in the States will make very little difference simply because there are already millions of weapons out there and enormous amounts of ammunition.

It is surprisingly easy to get a rifle in the U.K. but you are properly vetted by the police.

As I understand it , it is possible to purchase a firearm in America and some lazy shop owners will do the check later.

It shouldn't be any harder to properly vet and police 330 million people than it is 65 million of this country .

The problem is that the weapons are already out there.

Wasting your time debating gun laws in the States, they like their guns and thats that...

As to the two incidents, seems to me one was the result of a nervous police officer feeling he'd been threatened, the other was a man getting his just deserts....

The sniper situation is just gonna make things worse for a few months... if the police tell you to stop, put your hands up, then if I was living in the States I'd be doin just that as quick as I can..

And, if anyone gets killed by a cop askin em to do just that and they think its a good time to take the piss, well more fool them...

As per usual with these things people are passionate about theyre opinions and views,i dont mean to offend anyone and i know others participating in this discussion mean no ill to others aswell.

Also it seems we have veered off the track on this one

(as per usual on arbtalk) and ended up discussing gun laws on the states when the OP was about the shootings goin on today and yesterday.

I really hope the shootings stop and people can investigate these trajic events.

My best wishes and prayers goes to those families that have lost loved ones

America needs to change its gun laws,is it any wonder people and police officers are being shot when anyone can walk into gun shop and purchase an AK47 with very little checks being made..seriously something must be done, how many gun related shootings or fatalities have they had in the recent past in schools or education facilities.

Shocking

Never going to happen. The NRA are too powerful a lobbyist for that to happen.

Switzerland also have an extraordinary number of guns in private hands but nowhere near the number of murders relative to the US. Go figure.:confused1:
