Better with a spear cut for that move, IMO ,it saves having to push it

 

spear cut is fine for a girly yorkshire tops off a tree, but a meaty scottish top doesnt do torpedo unless you get the lean on it first, if you get the butt really moving then it will spin right round and lie flat:001_smile:

sometimes i will fell the top onto another tree, cut throught he hinge and push it into the gap butt first, this is more of a naughty trick though, and sometimes its worth the ear slapping. lol. if this gets deleted i will understand why

When cutting and chucking long thin branches watch that the stub doesnt spring up at you throwing the saw towards you, cut close to the stem or just be prepared.

 

You could always cut to the side rather than straight down, you also have to be carefull that whilst holding the branch your arm does not get pulled onto the moving chain seen this happen!

Alternativly just use a Silky if its small and light enough to be hand held more than likly a silky will cut it. I always have my silky with me even on dismantles.

if you do it right then its ok, but it isnt a recomendation, its a naughty thing to do that you learn after making a mistake by getting it stuck in the first place, do not try this at home kids:blushing:

dont do it sideways, although being adjacent to the hinge might seem safer, but when you push it away it brings the head toward you. its a great trick for multi stemmers and you are roped off another rather than being on a pole. but yes naughty, so i think it will be in the unorthadox techniques book

look out for dead wood was a good one. i had to remove a couple of big limbs off a big oak tree recently. stuck the pulley at top of tree came down to the branch tied it off cut it and it shook the anchor branch. which snaped off a dead limb that fell down and hit me on the head lesson learned.
