Climbing dead trees

This was a 2 or 3 year dead deodar, we did a while back. I wouldn't have wanted to rig too big off it mind.

If I were truly doubtful of any dead tree's structural integrity?

 

Had that much open room around it?

 

I'd fell it, or guy it with three guy lines.

 

There's almost always some way to get it done safely, almost.

My tuppence worth is with dead trees I normally spike up them rather than bag a line in.

That way you can get a feel on the up.

Any weight you can lose during the ascent is a bonus.

As Mick says, Reg's vid is worth a look, although he's dealing with extreme cases.

Cause of death and fungal activity play a massive part on how shot the tree will be.

Just Google Graham McMahon Tahune Airwalk the night before you do it Timon.

Most takedowns are pretty easy after watching that.

Customer said cedar, I was unsure.

I'm going to climb it (carefully)

I'll have a bit of a dig around the base for any signs of wet rot/decay (thanks Gary)

Not enough room to fell it in one.

I'll strip it and top it (thanks Mick)

Then fell the stick as soon as I can after chogging it.

If it's really bad I'll look at guying it. (Thanks Jomoco)
