working over an asbestos roof?

A customer of mine asked me to have a look at some conifers at the back of her house. some cowboy charged her £800 to lop the top two metres off a row of eight small trees that were only about five metres high to start with. He left the last three as they were behind the shed. I'm happy to finish the job but the shed has an asbestos roof. I wouldn't be standing on it anyway but was wondering if any precautions are needed?

Maybe wear a face mask as a precaution anyway , I would . Not an expert on asbestos though my friend .

Your common garage roof will be cement bonded asbestos. You'll be fine around this as long as you don't start dropping lumps of tree through it.

It's not radioactive, just don't break it.

You could lay a sheet of ply over the section being worked and shuffle it along as you go, the material itself is brittle with age, but not of a highly toxic variety, if it's damp even less so, just work carefully so as not to trash it.

Examine and photograph it before hand.

This way you are covering yourself in the event of any dispute.

Some buildings here covered in 50 year old sheeting should be condemend anyway.

Old asbestos is very brittle but as long as you don't drop anything big on it you're no more at risk of breathing in dust than living in it.
