Hi lux, reliable will go on for ever but small bed on the double cab, gutless, and over priced. You'll get more for ya money with the Isuzu. Rangers seem alright but a bit thirsty

 

I've noticed that the Hilux is considered to be reliable, very high mileage possible, at the same time they're considered overpriced, isn't the reliability what you're paying for. Keep it long term and it'll pay for itself, keep trading up and you don't loose as much, No?

 

Not disputing what you're saying as I simply don't know.

 

I was definitely going for a Ranger as they seem better equipped compared to the Hilux especially the mid range versions but ultimately I want long term durability/reliability and I've seen some reports of transmission problems (axles/gearbox) with the Ranger.

Hilux will live for ever but you may have to live forever too to get up some hills in one... (in that price range)

Got a ranger mk1 facelift and it's great. Would say consumption is average (average 27mpg) easy to work on, really simple vehicle. Fairly short geared so shots at 2.5k when doing 60mph.

Mine is a 2.4td it's the damn turbo lag that just seems to kill it. Not to bad when your in the turbo but working my way down the gears with every hill when I am towing.

The spec I got is not too bad with electric mirrors windows rc locking etc.

 

Did think of getting a newer truck but it is a gamble what ever you get!

Hi All . This is my first post and I thought I would jump in here and give you my experience of my old P reg Hilux double cab . I bought it in 1998 and it now has 237,000 miles on the clock . It has been regularly maintained and whilst I can't say it has never let me down it has been by and large reliable . It now has a custom made rear body and canopy as the original one rusted out . Not having a turbo I can confirm they are pretty sluggish but I can wind it up to 80mph on the motorway .

 

I did some sums on what I have spent on it since I bought it . Including purchase price I reckon I have spent about £100,000 on it . This includes fuel , insurance , maintenance and tax and although it sounds a lot , it doesn't sound so bad if divided by the number of years I have owned it .

 

I can't comment on any of the other pickups as I haven't needed to look at any as I haven't broken this one yet !

It does seem a lot if I'm honest as you can run a brand new truck for the same money!

Older rangers suffer with fifth gear problems and rear diff / axle challenges (don't ask how I know...) but otherwise are pretty bombproof. Comfier than a Hilux for me and cheapish at the pump. Look out for a good one but have some cash set aside for repairs

That's the plan. I've wanted one for ages. I'm mechanically competent and qualified and know a few places for parts and advice. I think I going Ranger or L200. Hiluxes have all been knackered or really over priced
