Ash stump, roots needs killing off...

Hi all,

 

I have an Ash tree stump that needs killing off, it's about 2 1/2 ft across...what would be the best way to get this killed off asap? ie: is it best to drill around outer edge, what product do I need to buy etc? Also the stump stands about 18 inches or so out of the ground, would it be best to cut it down a little more first?

 

Any advice much appreciated...........

Others may differ.

Drill around outer edge, pour neat glyphosphate into the holes then cover with a bin bag to prevent spillage in case of rain.

IME an ash stump that large is unlikely to resprout.

Maybe yours already is though.....

I heard the other week to take a slice off the top an inch or so then drill the holes and fill with glyphosate and then nail/screw the slice back on top.

Yes gallop should do it ,might need a couple of applications.

Just use salt in the cambial layer directly under the bark. As they said above fresh cut a layer from the stump and cut with the chainsaw a line in the cambial layer stuff and with salt and cover it. Do it in the growing season, which is very soon

Wife out on a jolly just now so she'll pick up a bottle of Roundup concentrated stump killer as it's available locally, Gallup I can't get unless mail ordered.....reference drilling holes, how deep/wide etc? Would it be best to use a wood bit for larger holes or just a HS bit? The tree was felled over a year ago BTW so unsure if I need to take any off the top or just drill away......ref' the salt method, the stump is cornered against a side and shed wall so can only get to half the cambial layer.

This is what I do. I had a landscaper,who I was working with the other week, swore by using brake fluid, works everytime and is fast acting.

Yes, I will try this method....just wondering about size/depth of holes now, ie: will deeper/wider holes help kill it quicker ref' there being more glyphosphate poured in, or am I over complicating it

Inch or two deep, I just use a chainsaw to dig grooves rather than a drill.

The drill bit for eco plugs has a washer welded on for a 1 3/8" - 1 5/8" drilling depth.

A friend takes a ring off approx 1" and then chases the cambium with the saw, in goes salt and the ring goes back on as a lid to stop the salt washing away.
