The very last email I received was one just flicked through it out of interest and it says

'We have our Basic Package of SEO which called “Winner” would be $149 per month for 10 keywords. Contract period would be minimum 6 months.'

Are people mad? $900 for them to add ten words to a website for you?!

Ok, so, what do you mean by content? I've got all I need in my website I just need it to rank better. How do I do that?

Google used to work mainly from meta info/tags on a site, i.e., keywords, description. They now look more at how 'interesting' your site is to other people in terms of how frequently the content is updated, how active you are on Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc. How many people reference your site on their site.

I wouldn't say that SEO is dead. You just have to pay attention to all the above.

Of course if you are just wanting to promote your company via a relatively static site, without feeling the need to tell the world how many raisins were in your Alpen, it's a bit of a challenge.

There are a few things you can do for starters to boost your ranking:

1. Get a relevant domain name. If you do tree work, having "tree" in your domain name is a plus.

2. Create a sitemap and make sure Google can find it.

3. Get a business listing on Google+.

4. Do have a description tag on your site. Google does still use them.

5. If you can add topical stuff to your site, e.g., details of recent projects, then do.

6. If you add stuff be sure to update your sitemap (see 2).

I have a "news" page and update the site weekly with new pictures etc I'm currently mid way on page one and have been for a couple of years, don't get obsessed with being no 1 as everybody has a different way of looking at things, some people never go for the first 3 etc so as long as your on page 1 some where all is well, obviously not the last on the list either.

If you really want to pay attention get google analytics on your site as well, if will show you how many visits your site gets, where they came from etc, for example I had a call yesterday at 8:30am I looked at analytics last night and know the call came from a website visitor and the search term they used (which I am number one for) if someone visits my page from my sig which happens a few times a week I can see the visitor came from arbtalk, see screenshot for what I mean!

SEO is definitely not dead! The meaning is Search Engine Optimization, therefore writing great content for Google is SEO :)

I Definitely still recommend ensuring that all the meta tags / descriptions are all correct and read well, I was told about 2 weeks ago on a Google webinar to still ensure these are correct as Google does read this as well as everything on your pages.

I have recently added a blog to my website! Which I don't really understand 😂 But I just add pictures of latest jobs etc and description on how we did it etc!! I'm hoping this helps with my ranking! But I don't know!!

You need as much good content as possible. If you aren't good at writing get someone else to. When adding pictures ensure that the Alt tags have the right info in so that google can tell what they are.

Your right, adding good content could be classed as SEO and when I add posts I still do meta and alt tags etc etc but in the original sence seo is pretty much dead as Google changes the goal posts all the time, the Web company's who try sell seo work fir 500 quid with the promise of top ranking are talking bull.

Totally agree, most of it is black hat SEO which is banned by google, and if your website is blacklisted by them it is v difficult to regain credibility.

Every ''SEO'' company who have phoned me and promised to get our website on the first page of google swear that they dont use adwords, and when questioned it turns out that they do, so dont be taken by the ''first page of google for a month for £100'' as all they do is a cruddy one line ad placed at the bottom of the page.
