Supermarkets and Sunday trading

Okay so being the old romantic and having watched the rugby in Cardiff yesterday, I decided the get my wife some flowers for Valentines day after leaving the hotel in Cardiff. First stop Aldi, only the best would do, pulled into car park at 9.30am, did a couple of calls until they opened at 10.00. Got out of car at exactly 10.00 and walked to door to be told by young assistant they didn't open until 10.30, my local store opens at 10.00. I was told if I was going to wait then be careful that I was allowed 90 mins parking after that it was a "fine", remember I arrived at 9.30

Next move across road to Asda who were open, parked, walked in at 10.05, selected a dozen red roses and went to check out. Waited with 7 other potential purchasers at unmanned checkouts to be told by a passing manager that although they were open, you couldn't buy anything until 10.30. I asked her what was the purpose of opening , she just shrugged her shoulders, told me it was the Sunday trading laws and took the roses off me

Back in car down the road 5 miles to Lidl at Barry, who opened at 10.00, walked in, as they opened earlier than the others, they only had 1 bunch of roses left, which I grabbed.

Finally went to Bridgend outlet where there are some 70 stores that open at various times between 10 and 11 on Sundays with some opening at 10.30 but no purchases until 11.00

Surely these Sunday trading laws are hindering customers and shops and need to be reconsidered. After all we can order and pay online 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

Visiting Sweden at the mo and pretty much the whole town looks to close down for Sunday. No chance of a pint of milk here.

 

Upside of that is pretty much the whole town look to spend Sunday out doing fun stuff.

Of course this could read another way, some would say, dear diary, had a great time at the rugby but nearly effed it up with the valentines flowers, managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat by grabbing the last bunch at the supermarket

Imo they should go back to the way it was and close on a Sunday, give the poor buggers who work there a day off.

I love to go shopping on Sunday when the shops are closed. It's very quiet & peaceful. Stress free too.
