Rounded bolt!

Hello

 

I hang my head in shame - for I have rounded a bolt.

 

Without a welder, how would one get it out?

 

It's a 13mm, I'm thinking of holding a 12mm socket on it, spraying some black paint through socket to get the shape and then filing to match.

 

Is there an easier way? I brought some special sockets but they didn't work!

Could try and cut a grove in the top if access allows and use a screwdriver be careful not to cut too deep.

 

Or hammer a smaller socket over the top,

 

Guessing you can't get a set of grips/stilson pipe grips to it?

I always try the smaller socket trick first, then stop messing around wasting time and drill it out to use a stud extractor.

Hammer a smaller socket on

 

Mike grips/pipe wrench if access is there

 

Cut a groove and screw driver it

 

Cut a grove in one side near a corner and turn it with an air chisel or hammer and screw driver etc

 

Borrow a welder and weld a new bolt to it

If you have good enough access you could drill out the centre and use a bolt extractor, eg; Screw & Bolt Extractor Set 5 Piece - Toolstation ....when you've got a wiggle out of the bolt spraying PlusGas penetrating fluid should help.

 

As an alternative you could try wacking a blunt chisel (a sharp one will just slice off the head!) on the edge of the bolt in the direction you want it to turn.... if you get a wiggle use the PlusGas as above. Drilling out the centre of the bolt can also help in this scenario.

 

Are you sure it's a right hand thread?

p.s.... no need to hang head in shame; garages deal with the same on a regular basis.

A half inch socket is slightly smaller than 13mm, if you can get it started on the bolt then hammer it on, I have in the past managed to get the socket to cut a new hexagon by grinding the socket so it was sharp on the leading edge. Mind your eyes whilst belting sockets!!

Those bolt extractors from toolstation never work.

you can buy some irwin ones from most car spares shops that are designed to remove rounded bolts.
