I would not dismiss it entirely , I'm having a problem with filling too much hook on my cutters when tired and wet at the minute and debating getting a grinder or one of these now I've seen one too keep my chains in check every 5-6 sharpens.

I like a nice clean deep hook on the cutters but it can cause too much trouble in wrong conditions or wood.

I know what you mean been there many times , I usually have two or three sharp chains ready for such moments.

I bought one a year ago. I like it, but I was disappointed to find that I had to adjust the slider when switching sides. I found that depending on the chain size or rather width, it wasnt cutting even.

 

So I just bought a cheap plastic caliper and measure and adjust.

 

To be fair it does get the chain as new. I dont agree that it takes off so much, as it all depends on how much you set the slider. I find it definitely takes less than my round file as my chains last longer.

 

The carbide cutters aint cheap either I think €25 each; I'm on my second set.

 

I like the fact that its not got a motor to worry about.

 

It took a good while to get used to it; and I have to wear gloves sharpening as the filings used to get stuck in my finger.

 

Not sure its worth the money. I like the sharpener that Rob sells, which is a lot cheaper.

 

I lube my cutter with some chain oil when sharpening? Was told by the guy that sold it to me that it helps??

Another option we did try but I'm not disciplined enough to sharpen the awkward or blunt ones unless the saw is wearing it.. I could try getting some specs so I can see the cutters better I guess !

These work a treat and cost a tenner.

I put one in the truck today .... Some how I've not done it for a while though but a month back I ended up with every thing from my climbing saw 560 and 576 would not cut straight no file guide in the box, ... Have not used a guide for a couple of years , should get some reading glasses !

Haven't yet used the "timberline" sharpened chain yet as I'm not back on the saws until Friday, so can't comment on how well it's cutting yet.

 

I would also like to clarify, my sharpening ability with a round file is absolutely fine. The reason for the purchase is that I have recently lost access to a nice vice and I don't think my housemates wouldn't be too happy if I bolted one to the kitchen counter.

 

I do agree with previous posts, the finished result hasn't got as big a hook as I usually file however, the proof will be in the cutting on Friday
