Hi

I have acquired a load of this wood - the tree has been dead for a fair few years prior to felling - the wood is like concrete.

Can anyone tell me what it might be please?

I must admit it looks very attractive but has been ringed so not much for it now :( very heavy and hard so not locking forward to splitting it

So I'm not alone....

Did a bit similar to that this week alongside the elm.

Feel / felt your pain....

One thing I did learn when ringing it, make the rings no thicker than about 5 inches

Any thicker and the splitter will just laugh and burst a seal instead....

Some nice spalted beech. Too good for

firewood.

Is there a demand for it for wood turning? In which area of Arbtalk might we find wood turners looking for "Spalted hardwoods"?

Does seem a shame to burn it ,if woodturners can make use of it, as long as they will pay a reasonable price for it.

In my opinion, the more spalted it is the more it shatters when split, very time consuming just cutting it in to small firewood blocks with a chainsaw,to avoid shattering it.

not just woodturners - i've made some lovely cupboards from spalted beech planks. here is a spalted beech tea-light holder sitting on a spalted beech cupboard.
