Thanks everyone; lots of info for me to consider.

Alycidon, I suppose this is the info I'm really after, thanks. So the hardwood's going to cost me £55 a ton + VAT from the forestry? What sort of price could I expect to pay per ton for the kiln dried Baltic stuff?

Pm sent,

A

I'm considering buying 3m lengths of hardwood from the Forestry Commission and hiring in someone to process it into firewood with their equipment (I have none). On average, what sort of amount could I expect to be processed per day? Thanks in advance.

How longs a piece of string? So many variables most of which come down to the quality and size of the wood. We run a Farmi WP36 and have done what the customer thought was 17 tonnes in the day with one very able helper. This was on relatively consistent wood but plenty of misshapen lumps as well. Also didn't mind some over sized logs ending up in the pile but all cut to 9". If the wood is all banana shaped and the logs need to be very consistent you might get through only 8 tonnes in the day. If you had a load of lengths not dissimilar to telegraph poles could make a hell of a lot of logs in a day. I work on normally doing 12 tonne a day with a helper with quality of wood we see down here.

I had a pilki 2x not the best processor but with decent cord we used to do about 2 cube an hour inc dinner and tea breaks and loading the deck. Screwing our clapped out machine back together. 16 cube a day and we had enough by then.

Our WP36 + 2 Operators normally produces 25-30 builder bags per day. Cutting to 25cm, up to 14" diameter 3m long larch or spruce.

A lot depends on the site and how the wood is stacked for the processor.

A bit too far for me to travel Richard.....I'm based in Argyll in Scotland.

We hire out the processor with either 1 or 2 operators. Either day rate or rate per bag for long term contracts.

Cheers,

My guess, is about 8 to 12tn a (good) day. And that's me on my own.

3t min digger fitted with a hydraulic thumb, loads a roller conveyor that butts up near to the loading conveyor of our Rytec CP800 (eco) processor.

I'll either load into the telehandler bucket to a huge vented pen, or into tattie boxes.
