Since I don't do any real work these days I was getting unfit..

Sign up for an event, preferably with someone else who is fitter. Then get on strava and you can compare your exercise with your friends. It can be quite motivating if you know active people..

I have signed up for the Vitruvian triathalon, 1900m swim - 85k bike - 21k run. Already half regretting it, but it does give focus....

Insanity is so called for good reason, ive trained with weights for years,im no body builder im 11.5 stones soakin wet but ive found doing weights in a curcuit gives you great strength and cardio conditioning.

Insanity takes your heartbeat to 180 bpm's and over,at that increased rate your body will burn as much muscular tissue for energy as it will glycogen and fat.

The key here, espescially for us guys over 40 is to burn fat as energy when training and retaining as much muscle mass as possible.

Its admirable to change your lifestyle and try to get fit and healthy but going straight into a program thats beyond your capabilities will demoralise and eventually wear you out,as well as your joints with all that jumpin around.

Start slow, and work up to advanced workouts such as shaun T's Insanity...remember slowly slowly catchy monkey.

Good luck steve

I think I probably hit the 180 bpm's the first day, hence I took a funny turn. Have a heart rate monitor now so will be watching carefully. Was speaking to my osteopath today and he said I need to stick within 75% of my maximum heart rate, in my case thats about 144 bpm's. I was training at 160 last night and felt ok so will probably aim for somewhere in the middle(ish) at 150 bpm's

Ideally train within the fat burning zone, roughly between 100-150 bpm's.Numbers vary as to age,sex fat percentages etc but 100-150 would be optimal steve.

Be careful you dont ruin your joints,a good healthy eating plan rich in omega oils is just as important as exercise for good results mate:001_smile:

Steve, you seem a bit faddy about this stuff, dumbells, paleo diet and now this.

I was very fit as a younger man, played football to decent standard, cycled miles (after I lost my licence) ran for pleasure. I do nothing now except walk the dog, I'm to scared of injuring myself and missing work.

Unless you enjoy what you're doing for fitness you'll never stick at it. Trying to punish yourself with this year's version of Circuit Training will probably end in failure.

Try a sport, one you can do with other people.
