One danger is your going to yeah someone everything and train them to do everything the right way give them all there tickets then they leave and start up against you or go freelance.

No way of stopping it, I've always had apprentices that come from the other side of the country and stay for a few years then go back home or abroad.

Pay someone £2 an hour and see what you get!

I'm not talking big money but people need to put a roof over their heads.

 

However just looked it up and for a 21 year old it's £6.70.

 

 

I think it works out around £40 a day for under 21, which is £800 a month or so. For a dependant with no rent or kids, that's okay, especially since they're learning a trade, getting qualifications etc.

 

There's nothing to stop you paying a good candidate more. As Eggs mentioned a discretionary bonus is a good plan.

 

Try being the nice boss who pays trainees over the odds. Experience shows it doesn't pay off.

 

IME it's good to keep people hungry, until they're at a stage where there such an asset you wouldn't like to lose.

Hmm yes, that's what I'm worrying about. Do you HAVE to pay for them to do there nptc tickets? Is it something that you have to pay for by law?

I pay my lad £50 for a 7 hour day. To me he's worth it as I can leave him to get on with it and do other things

Work the training/ tickets into the contract of employment. Jimmy works for you, you put Jimmy through his tickets, on the agreement that he gets ticket (a) and stays (x) months or he pays a percentage of the cost of the training/ticket back.

Problems is if Jimmy's a ***** and leaves owing time or money for a course your never going to get it back even with a contract.

I'm trying to put down, just making aware of the pitfalls

No but still at college 3 days a week.

I tried other lads paying them less and they were all useless!

I would not pay less than that anyway as its not in my interest to have someone working and not paying attention to detail.

Like anything you get what you pay for.
