Forestry workers dwelling.... and that thing called Planning!!

Has anyone here at Arbtalk had any success with obtaining Planning Permission for building a permanent home for forestry purposes, ie a rural workers forestry dwelling?....

 

I don't mean a shack.... or small caravan.

I seem to remember a guy on grand designs managing to build a house from timber from his woods. It took a long time to get permission and heavy restrictions/covenants on property when built. It was a good programme. He literally built a lovely house using the timber from the woods using traditional methods.

Yeah - that was Ben Law.

Surely there must be more than one person that has done this!

it was ben law, he had years of problems with planning consent, and had covenants placed on the build( these have since been removed),

aparently it is possible to do it, but you must follow a very carefully laid out path, and make sure all the t's are crossed and i's dotted

Was a good answer, I think every UK resident that owns a TV should have heard of Ben law by now....

Didn't it cost something like 20k to build and most of that went to the architect and structural engineer ?

I have permanent residency for forestry worker and family but not gonna build anytime soon, it took 12 years and nearly cost my missus her sanity! There are several people throughout UK who've managed it, Ithere is a new book called '30 years in wilderness wood' about a forester and family.

From memory Ben Law's cost 3k over budget of about 26k and that was cos he hadn't realised the cost of double glazing.
