Not sure I'd agree with that, it's always (in my opinion of course) worth paying a bit more to get the GoreTex liners in any item of clothing that would be beneficial to be waterproof.

 

Correctly caring for your kit is the biggest factor in this, GoreTex doesn't simply stay waterpoof by itself, it needs to be re-treated every so often (NikWax is great for this by the way) to keep it in good condition. The same applies to boots themselves, those that complain about them falling apart too quickly, how often do they get cleaned, polished and the leather treated? This can easily improve not only their lifespan, but also their comfort and waterproofing qualities too.

 

thats my point, to keep your boots in good nick you still need to wax them anyway. i wax my boots and it keeps them plenty waterproof which makes goretex a bit of a waste of time.

 

it works great for jackets and trousers but in boots it is pointless imo

What do people apply to their boots to keep them supple/waterproof?

My Granddad always swore by Neatsfoot oil for his hobnailers, I used to use dubbing way back but was told it rots stitching. Latterly i've been using Nikwax liquid, with good results, but i seem to remember in the blurb that came with my last pair of Haix something about not applying ''greasy'' leather treatments.

Does that include original Nikwax? If so, doesn't seem to leave to many options other than the seemingly ubiquitous ''Chelsea Boot Food''. Never tried this - any good?

I used to use saddle soap when I was young n keen, nowadays I cant be bothered so I just dog a pair of boots then get some more.

Waterproofing? Ranapur (sp?) every time. 30 secs per boot occasionally, keeps them tip top. Not sure on Haix though, never had any!

Haix haix haix haix end of story. Absoloutely love them, and on 3rd pair of protector pros. Gore tex- ace. Nikwax waterproofer- great. I sweat like the guy off the lynx ad with the fish under his arm when i go for it, but strangely my feet are nearly always dry at the ned of the day. I cant rate them highly enough.
