It might not be a proposition for a sawmill, the first thing they are going to wonder is, "what about inclusions", single stems are often tree surgery arisings and are often viewed sceptically. Transporting singles is also quite uneconomical.

Someone with a portable outfit might be a better bet, sounds like a job for someone with an Alaskan mill or similar but there comes a point where its just not economical.

There are plenty of hobbyists out there but they seldom want to pay much and the first thing they usually ask is if it will fit in the family car or they rock up with one of those pressed tin "Erde" trailers from Halfords.

The key questions will be:

How straight is it?

Any sign of rot pockets or other defects from where old branches have been removed?

How wide is the heartwood? (the dark bit)

How dark is the heartwood?

The price will depend on the above and whether anyone wants it. I may be interested if I can tie the trip in with something else.

I can pretty much guarantee that the highest serious offer you get for it will be a fraction of the price the bloke down the pub reckons it's worth.

No, you are dead wrong, a customer once told me that a mate of his from down the pub reckoned that all walnuts were worth a grand, minimum. Purdey buy them all for gun stocks you know
