I was just saying that a winch is something that is god to have sometimes....but not nessecerily on these trees!

 

Sorry I dont have any videos...(easy to say) hopefully I will get a chance to show you if I manages to get the right object.

 

I just wanted to point out that some tecniques are complicated and therefore involves bigger risks eg trees "jumping off the butt, falling in a unintended direction etc...simple and safe is often better in my opinion, there is so many ways of using a wedge...I'll see if I can find some examples there ought to be Youtubeclips...

great video by the way, i have never heard of nything like this before, i like to play around with hinges but on extreme leans they cantake a beating, but with all those little cuts in to compress the wood, that is very clever indeed

Shallow gob that snapped the hinge before the tree hit the ground, and a low back cut so nothing to stop it sliding back.

Putting a stick or wedge in a shallow gob is to make the tree jump forward.

 

I believe this to be a Kerf Dutchman as opposed to the swinging Dutchmen in the vids.

Dont a lot of felling sites ban the use of any dutchmens cut ,thats some impressive felling though, found dutchmens very handy at times but cuts like the swing dutchmen are very unpredictable and im sure outlawed for deliberate use.

they are some really interesting cuts that i have never seen before , with a bit of luck at some point i wil get to give the dutchman a go but somewhere that it does not matter if a mess it up lol !!!!

I don't think these cuts can be relied upon 100%, with all the experience in the world they will sometimes go wrong.

 

The guy in the vids was trying to limit damage to trees that were being retained and reduce the work if retrieving the timber. So if it had not worked out no big deal.

i think i would only ever considder using a cut like the dutchman in a woodland or similar situation , i can see that the guy is in full controle but i think tht when it comes to cutting through nearly 3/4 of your hinge it is still a relative gambles as to weather it goes where you wnat it to go or not but never the less im sure it does work really well once you get the hang of cutting it !!
