Hi all ,

Hope you can help with some advice on purchacing my first log splitter!!

I am not a tree surgeon or aborist so dealing with trees is not fulltime for me!

But i do work for the local highways department ( trained chainsaw operative ) and get to deal with wind blown trees in the highway!!!

So i have been looking at petrol driven splitters and the upright Titan Pro 8 ton and 10 tonner.

Is there any others i should be looking at ( budget £1000 ) and do i need to go up to the 10 tons!!

Thank you for reading ,

Ray.

I've got the 8 ton lawnflyte petrol one think it's the same as the Titan, had it two years.

Had a problem last month with the ram not returning, but it just needed adjusting.

I've found it to be fine, splits everything I've thrown at it old oak, sycamore, ash, pine.

Frugal on fuel,i store it indoors during winter and in wood shed during summer, weighs 125 kg so takes two people to shift has small wheels.

I split on top of another round of wood as the ram is high from the plate, only got a small sized log burner, Morso squirrel .

I could have written that post myself Magic Rat.

I get on well with my machine, but it's a bitch to transport, and the ram does stop far too high above the plate.

I split on top of one or two scaffold board offcuts.

Has to be the Oxdale for me, see here

I have the tractor-mounted variant that runs from the tractor hydraulics, so it's very good value at around £500. The petrol-powered one should still be within your price range. 10 ton force, so it's plenty strong enough for most rings you might come across.

I can't recommend them highly enough. I have had mine for six years and I split about 10-15 tons a year for my own use, and it hasn't missed a beat at all. It is still like new and operates perfectly.

They give a three-year warranty and even give a one-year return and refund if you're not completely happy with the machine. I spoke to them three or four years ago and they hadn't had any returns.

Have a look at Rock Machinery, and their venom range of splitters. I have the 22 ton version which is brilliant. That one's over your budget, but I believe the 12 ton version is around £750 - £800. The beauty of the 22 ton splitter is that it can be changed between vertical and horizontal splitting, depending on log sizes etc.
