I suppose it happens in many different occupations.

Say you were a classic car specialist, perhaps in Aston Martins, and somebody came along with a beautiful original DB5 and wanted you to put in wide alloy wheels, flared arches, bonnet scoop and American V8 and was paying top dollar, would you tell him where to go or just take the money because someone else surely would.

Who owns the car, me or him?

Bit more to it than that.

If you are in a strong financial position and have scruples then you can say what you want but if you are starting out, working for somebody, short of money with a wife and child to take care of, the tree comes second.

This... Morals do not pay the bills. I remember when I first started and was asked to "reduce" my mums neighbours prunus aviums, big ones, and I just pollarded the hell out of them.. They're fine. The world is harsh and nature will be here a lot longer than we will. Just crack on as someone else will and probably do a crap job of it. You may as well make the best of a bad situation.

i think the best thing like many have said is to advise on best course of action for the tree according to bs3998 and then do whatever the client or contractor wants doing, as being a professional means working to the spec of the client who owns the trees. If your not happy with doing this, maybe your in the wrong job and should try to become a tree officer.
