Can you successfully weld up a diff pan without first taking the diff out? As in just drain the oil out, grind, weld and refill with oil or does the diff need to come out? Thanks, William.

You can weld it, you can ( could) even buy a new pan if needed. Try not to get any crud in there, probably important that bit.

the pan is available as a spare part i would just weld the new one on top for a quick hassle free repair

 

There was an aftermarket diff cover that was made to go over the top of the old cover. They may still sell it, worth a try GP Reinforced Diff Pan
