Soundproofing idea's

Hi All

Getting in grief from the other half and the neighbours due to noise from man cave.

What do you guys do to soundproof your workshops?

I'm not using massive machines etc, just a router, sander, drill (normal hand held tools).

I've seen some deadening material but costs a fortune.

Any help greatly appreciated (especially if its not gonna cost a fortune and keeps me out of the bad books)

It might be worth finding out from your other half which of the machines is causing an issue. I'd be surprised if it was the sander and the drill (unless you're using them at 1 am) but a router can be a real scream as loud/penetrating as a planer or a table saw - I try not to use mine out of daylight hours and I live in a detached house.

There are two ways to approach it or a combination of the two.

One is containment where you you would use something like soundproof plasterboard mounted on resilient bars. You need to pay attention to details like door seals and ways sound can leak out. The other is absorption. As I mentioned in the first post R60 rockwool with a mesh cover like this Wire Mesh Fabrications | Acoustic Perforated Mesh

On the job I did we installed all the rockwool and it was amazing on its absorption but it all went wrong from there as the guy did not like the idea of the mesh due to dust and a potential fire hazard so we installed the resilient bar and sound block plasterboard over the top. It did the job and complied with the sound reduction requirements but it was so much better when the rockwool was exposed. You can get most of the materials through builders merchants except the mesh.
