Spanners

Right, I'm after some spanners, i want them to be ratcheting and be able to buy them individually as and when required, so i can build up a decent set and not spend a fortune all at once. I already have some metric ones so i'm really only after imperial sizes.

I know of a few brands that have been recommended on here such as bahco, facom and teng. But I'm not sure which ones to go for as they are all quite similar.

At the moment i'm leaning towards facom as it looks like they have a lever to reverse them as well but i'm not sure if the other makes do that as well.

Could anyone recommend a good supplier and which make to go for?

If I need a one off tool for heavy use I buy britool but am being won over by sealey an American brand that make great quality and reasonably priced tools. Both brands sell individually or as sets and I would recommend them both. I know sealey do metric and imperial but not sure if they also do AF.

Despite being a tool snob I do have a halfords socket and spanner set in the van for "on the job maintenance" and despite the ratchets not being top quality if hasn't let me down.

Halfords professional range come with a lifetime warranty and can be bought individually or in sets.

Do they cover the spanners with individual moving parts ? I have heard of people being refused replacements for ratchet parts out of warranty.

Not used the ratchet spanners but I bought a Facom 3/4" drive set recently and its definitely good quality stuff.

I bet that cost a bob or two! what are the ratchets like? I've never been a fan of ones with rubber handles. Where did you buy them from?

A set would work out much cheaper than buying individually. Your way could easily double the cost, possibly more.

Lever turning a shaft seems to work better than a slider like on the teng. Teng fan but not so impressed with their ratchet spanners. I have Palmera but only I need them for light work. They change direction nicely but not sure how long they would last for heavy use.

Great bits of kit though. Even with a good name I would never use them for hi-torque applications if you want them to last. Try before you buy and pick a style you like.
