I have an Android app called Maverick that can send proper Lat/Long coords by email or text in a couple of clicks. Again you need a signal but you can preload your destination then pinpoint where you will be working and send your location before you lose signal. Then it's down to your work/life partner to call 999 if you don't call in.

 

BUT lets face facts: If you sever an artery and you're by yourself in the middle of nowhere then no 'system' is going to save you.

You are correct a heart attack at 1 minute after logging in and then an alert 59 minutes later isn't much use either, this is in my eyes a paperwork excercise to keep a roof over my kids head if it goes to court why my insurance won't pay out

I've been using a Spot Gen 3 when working with Tilhill. Use it to check in with the office / home. It also has a "send assistance" button for non emergency breakdowns etc and also an "SOS" button that transmits your location to the emergency services.

When I know I am starting a job that involves climbing and particularly aerial chainsaw work I create a working schedule which I give to my client that way if something unexpected happens they know to worry I also combine this with regular calls to either my parents or fiance. This has always created a good safety protocol for doing lone work. Good luck in future.

I will add - in winter if doing a lot of miles, keep a sleeping bag in your vehicle in case you get snowed in
