pulling stuff with a tracked chipper??

as per title, pulling over trees, rolling logs, dragging out windblow stuff etc.

is this a good idea or will it damage the machine???

never used one before so any thoughts on this would be great thanks carl

I did it loads with my old 150 VTR and am having a big winch fitted to my new 230VTR. I had a tow hitch on the 150 and used to tow a trailer with it.

We use our tracked 150 to pull trees over, logs up banks and trucks that are stuck. There is a bar under the hopper that you can larks foot a sling around. Wouldn't have thought it is recommended by the manufactures but works just fine

and it didnt wear the drive motors or anything?? seems like it could be and handy and very quick way to pull stuff. had the tracked chipper in a little woodland today , a breeze compared with arb trollying all the brash out, just so good having the chipper right next to you all the time!

No doesn't seem to wear the belts out. We've had ours for three years and no probs. obviously if you try and pull a massive back leaner and the tracks start struggling and the belts scream then you know you have gone to far but as a rule for pulling normal stuff over and logs up a bank we've never had a drama

Tracked choppers aren't designed to tow or pull anything BUT most do..

 

I would recommend if you are planning to pull anything only pull it from the track unit it's self !!

On most tracked chippers the chipper unit is only bolted onto the track unit in some cases mount via rubber mountings

 

I've seen people pulling trees via the lifting eye on top of the chipper !! This being attached to the flywheel top cover which was never made to be pulled sideways with a flywheel spinning round at high speed inside!!

Care & caution since it's not a design feature. If things go wrong, it may void warranty and have PUWER / HSE implications.

It does work but be very careful what you tie the rope to. I know of one were it went wrong and it broke bones and another where the lad turned the chopper resulting in rolling the chipper.
