Burls

That looks great, puts me in mind of an active moon from some far flung unknown corner of the galaxy!

(No alternative 'active moon' pictures please you lot):sneaky2:

I'll take some pictures of the burls I know about in the wood and you can let me know if they would be suitable for you.

Great, I look forward to hearing from you.

You will be able to find them - but I think a lot of people working with trees get fed up with being offered less than firewood prices!

If you pay what people ask for then it works well for both parties - ie you get your burrs and the seller will then keep an eye out for them in the future for you.... because it was worth their while to do so on the first sale.

:001_smile:

I absolutely agree, just a case of getting myself known to the right people.

Lovely work, very different from most out there!

I've got a couple of big oak burrs that would certainly do you 400mm spheres. They don't include much of the original stems at all, they came off the side of a monster oak. I'm afraid the pics are a bit rubbish :(

I've resisted milling them into slabs for bowl turning blanks, in the hope that someone needs something for a massive one piece project. In an ideal world I'd like something like £50 a cubic ft for them, which would be pretty standard for air dried heavily figured timber. If anyone thinks that's complete nonsense I'd be interested to hear thoughts and opinions?

I'm not a million miles away, just south of Horsham. Contact details in the links below if you would like a cuppa and a look.

All the best, W

Out of curiosity, sorry to derail the thread slightly, but are pollard knuckles in the same league as more natural burls? As in, are they as dense or interesting? Got a few maple knuckles, can't remember if it was Norway or field, and wondering if I should try something with them.

You prob could yourself but it is the burrs that really get woodworkers juices flowing! :blushing: They are what people are after.

We should really have a burr thread on here so people who find them can move them on quickly - only issue can can be the transport or distance..

Yes pollard heads can yield some very dramatic wood , I have used quite a few to make hollow vessels with in the past and bowls , I generally visit a few tree surgeons yards ( who I have known for ages ) and have a mooch about for "ugly " bits for my work , Crotches are also desirable in fact almost anything but clean straight wood !! especially spalted as well . I get most of what I desire pretty cheap though as it is of no real interest to many others and not very good for firewood ... burrs if large are a bit different though... Terry ..

They are cool. Nice work.

Thanks, phone pics really don't do them justice, working on getting decent photos for a website!

These any good? They're ash, been kickin round the yard f ages.

They look a bit small and flat for my needs, although it is always difficult to guage size from photos. Where are you? Might be worth a look.

Do you have any photos of your work? A website? I would be interested to see.
