Hi Cornish that it mate RELAX that sounds great mate I no of some 3lb test is this much there some 20)30 in there thanks Jon

I would use a rod with a bit more flex but most use heavier. Lakes I normally fish in have up to low 30s in them and I prefer my 1 3/4 lb rods. More fun with lighter tackle IMO and more give in the rod when the carp shakes its head, also most of the fish would be sub 20 anyway. Big advantage with a heavier rod as you no doubt know is you can cast a heavier ledger/feeder further and steer the carp away from the snags so depends on the lake as well as the fish. 3lb would be fine. Those big carp will take a bit of catching so plenty of relaxing time there jon. My favourite is free lining with bread on the surface with light tackle.. A small quiet lake on a cool summers evening and a loaf of crusty bread takes some beating.

Hi Jon. I haven't a clue about carp fishing but our daughter has a 42 acre carp lake over here in France. If you want to see some monster carp and maybe get onto their Facebook page then you should look on their website. Chateau Moulin | Carp fishing holidays | fishing France | Limoges, Limousin, France

They would be pleased to give you advice on what kit you need. My son in law speaks the same language as you, he's from Dorset so you should be able to understand him! They have lots of fishermen from there and in the West Country so you may get a bit of local fishing by you.

Hi Jon, Have a look at the John Wilson Avon quivertip rod by Masterline. I have one and its fantastic. It has five or six pieces that you assemble in different ways to make different rods. So, you get a barbel rod and a quivertip rod and a float rod etc. Its really, really good and well in your budget I would think.

don't tell her its a hobby Richie. If you could put a five pound salmon on the kitchen table, like that bloke, then surely you're making a valuable contribution to the family :sneaky2:

That's a great idea. Trouble is I been using that great idea for a bit too long and her BS detector is now working really well. The only way I can think of is to say Jon coming a long way just to visit and the least I can do is go fishing with him for a few hours :biggrin:

At the cheaper end, value for money Shakespeare takes a bit of beating. I have one of their match rods and once caught a 15 lb carp on it with no problems.

Loads of rods out there to suit your budget. Multi tip are normally good value for what you get. You could probably get a half decent rod and reel for £100.

My favourite rods are Leeda specialist 11/4 with cork handles. Quiver or float tips but a bit light for some carp lakes.

Hi Jon, The Shimanos are one of the best but I use Okumas, very good IMO and cheaper  I'm a bit like you, I stopped fishing for twenty odd years then got back into it six or seven years ago. Seems to me the kit is much better and cheaper than when I was a kid.

:lol::lol: I think it would be only polite to go for a whole day  Especially Considering as Jon is coming such a long way, and hes been looking forward to it for such a long time, and he hasn't been fishing for years, and he really needs some help:thumbup1:
