Refuelling large excavator?

Following on from my exploits with a small digger, at some stage I'll be hiring a 15-tonne machine to dig out some proper lakes. The little Kubota had a 33l tank and I can pick up 30l containers of red to pour in, it used one a day.

 

Now, the big machines have a much bigger tank and thirst - is it just a case of getting more 30l containers or do folks hire in fuel bowsers to keep them running? I've been told I'll need it for about 9 days

For nine days work I'd just use the 25l drums.

Where is the best place to gets small amounts of red diesel. I only use my digger two or three times a year and use white diesel but it gets a bit pricey

45 gallon drum stick it in the bucket lift the boom up and get a long hose and pour it in easy peasy

Get a 45 gallon drum or two and either call you oil supplier to get it filled or go and see your local farmer and wave drinking tokens at him.most big diggers come with self filling pumps so you can suck gas oil out of a drum at ground level.jake

Most modern 360's have an in-built fuel transfer pump and hose in a dedicated locker. Gone are the days of trying to syphon fuel. I'd go for 205 litre drums from your local fuel supplier.

Boat yards are a good source of red, or try getting in touch with a local Ag Contractor or farm as they will have a bunded tank. Or touch base with aan oil supplier and take your own 205liter tank.

Working on a lake is more the reason to hire in a bunded bowser for the jobs duration. I doubt if your customer would appreciate even the smallest of spills near a lake.Play it safe.
