Anyone tried using a Stihl 13/64" 5.2mm file on an Oregon or Husky 3/8" pitch chain as apposed to the standard 7/32" or 5.5mm file. Given the smaller diameter file you would obviously get a smaller but deeper gullet and a sharper working corner. Initially better cutting performance but would the chain become blunt quicker? I'd be interested in the forums thoughts on this. Thanks, i hope i have the correct file sizes.

I doubt the .3mm would affect performance by much.

 

I use 5.2mm files wether I buy Stihl or Oregon chain.

Is it just that you prefer the 5.2mm files or like me do you get them thrown in as freebies from the dealer after dropping some coin on something shiny!

Hiya.

As answer to original post, back in the days of the 90s ,I and rest of the motley crew were taught by Steve Birkett to start filing all 3/8 chain with 7/32 files then when down to 1/2 top plate length change to 13/64 files. Always had great performance cutting wise but we were generally too lazy to put the extra files in the tool box, or to be bothered changing guides and handles!

404 chain always 7/32 and 3/8 picco/lp always 5/32

Never forgotten the education though.
