When did it change from being legal to use a shotgun with a solid slug on muntjac?

You can use a shot gun to shoot deer only if you get a licence to do so. And they done hand them out very often if at all.

13.31 The Deer Act also authorises the use

of smooth-bore guns of at least 12 bore for

shooting deer, firing a non spherical slug of

at least 350 grains to kill deer on cultivated

land, pasture or enclosed woodland if it can

be shown that the deer were causing serious

timber or other property, that such damage

was likely to continue and that that action

was needed to prevent this. This provision

was intended to allow farmers and crofters

who own a shot gun but not a rifle to deal

I think some are focussing on the wrong points here. Its irrelevent whether ALL farmers own guns or that non farmers can own guns. The point is if the farmers aren't the ones pulling the trigger, they are the ones who decides who shoots what on their land. And if they're not behind this re-introduction it will fail. But it appears no one is asking landowners their views

 

Aye, I think this is more what she is getting at. The fact that the project only has one social scientist on the team and loads of biologists is her main concern.

I would suggest a bit of research on gun use and ownership in the UK if she wishes to write a balanced article. Many farmers don't own guns for example, many people who shoot will not shoot animals and indeed some are vegetarian. My main gripe is the use of a photo with a shotgun when they would hardly ever be used on deer. Try talking to BASC.

 

I would also expect Lynx to be protected so not shot, if anything vehicles would be more of a threat.

 

Back to Thetford forest, I thought Lynx mainly targeted smaller animals; rabbits, hare and birds? I could seem them hunting Muntjac but how would the Lynx fair as Munties have evolved to fight off predators.

Regardless of whether the lynx are protected or not, this doesn't usually prevent anything - e.g. raptors getting killed.

 

She does agree on the vehicle thing because its sometimes a problem with reintroduction, but this usually only accounts for 10%. Unlikely with a lynx who prefer secluded woodland. If you look at the reintroduction of the lynx in France, all of them were killed intentionally in a failed reintroduction project.

i'm all for them being reintroduced if it's one that we eradicated years ago, same goes for wolves, brown bear, grey wolf, boar and beaver.

 

if the last two can be reintroduced then why not the others.

Could you please enlighten us as to how you know they are releasing Lynx (as opposed to suggesting a reintroduction) and the details of how they have had human contact?

 

You appear to know more on this than the Lynx Trust UK who only opened this to public consultation on Sunday?

Apparently the IUCN guidelines state that the Lynx shouldn't have human contact before being reintroduced. It's likely they will be taken from the wild in other parts of Europe and relocated to the UK with as little human interaction as possible. (I'm having this narrated to me as I type haha)
