Leaning pop felling

I have got a huge pop to take down, it has heavy lean in the right direction. it has a large cavity inside, I have never had to fell 1 this big with so much lean and with a cavity. Question is...when I gob it out then dog tooth it I will loose a lot of control of direction as there is a small amount of hinge left. Is there a different way of going about this? Leave as bigger hinge as possible?

With the lean in the right direction it's fairly straightforward. Small gob. Bore cut leaving a normal sized hinge of sound wood. Then release from the back.

That's where the problem lies, there is not much sound wood left for a hinge. The tree is located on the corner of an building site that has not being developed so it can't hurt anything wherever it goes,

is the cavity at the base where your felling cut is going to be?

I would use a slightly smaller gob, bore in from both sides leaving a good thick hinge, leave a holding strap at the back, stand back, cut and enjoy the fell.

every ones opinion might be different with out seeing the tree, how rotten it is, with out seeing the colour of the chip as you gob it, wind on the day, as how the tree behaves all could change how your going to fell it at any stage.

heavy leaners it's always best to leave a holding strap at back as you can't complete the back cut quick enough.

clip it's ears too to stop it tearing too

if your confident, get a good vid of it as we all like to see a good fell!

We got that to fell and chip up and an ash to dismantle tomorrow then hiab the day after to crane it off site. It's give off 30mph wind and rain here tomorrow

if it has a good lean and will defo go over, you can leave a massive hinge to help give you more control and security to stop it twisting off

good luck and hope it goes well, look forward to the vid if you mate one!
