Been trying to increase grip strength for climbing using hand grippers -

Saw this grip machine which looked better.....decided to try and make my own version.

Made from garage junk - old strimmer shaft, some steel pipe, a broom handle, mahogany offcuts, wire and araldite glue hold it together.

Works pretty good, need to get some proper barbell weights.

Some sort of Mid Life going on Tockmal?

Only kidding pal.

Good idea, Grip is such an integral part of our climbing system that we the majority take for granted.

I used to scoff at a climbing buddy 15 years ago watching him pump his hand gripper during the day.

Wish i had taken it on board, too often caught out on a rock face with nothing between me, my under developed grip and a big drop onto the wifes belay !

Agree,

If, you plan to climb every day for the next 15/20/30 years, try and do some strength/weight training at least a couple times a week to help support your joints and tendons as you get older.

I was off for four weeks over Christmas due to a driving accident and couldn't do much exercise so I went a bit hell for leather on those spring grip things. I went back to work really soon after using them and after a day or two of climbing and ground work I noticed my left arm was painful. Over the weekend it got worse and I could hardly do anything with that arm and this continued for a couple of weeks. The worst part of it was that I could hear my arm making a creaking noise when I clenched my fist! My advice is don't go nuts with things like this unless you are sufficiently warmed up and make sure you warm down after doing it too.

That does look smart Tockmal.

Wrist flexion is also good for improving grip, sit upright in a chair and place your forearms on your thighs with your palms facing up.Grip a weighted bar/truck axle/pipe with cinder blocks on each end and bend your knuckles toward the floor, then toward the ceiling.

"Pop eye" forearms in no time!

Tockmal,

I was thinking about your post today as I serviced a bunch of equipment.

I used a hand squeeze grease gun to grease about 40 points (zerks) on several pieces of equipment. My hands got a real workout

If you want to build up hand strength, maybe give Thor (Ed) a call and offer to grease a bunch of whole tree processors :icon14:

That will make your hands strong, sort of a redneck hand strengthening machine

for wrist and fore arm strengthening try wrist curls the revers ones palms facing down are tough going.

Steve indoor climbing is only boring depending on where you go. my local is huge and they change the routes everyso often that picture doenst show all the routes / walls but there is enough to challenge most
