Bloody hell !, that is completely ****. Now you think of it the black shrink wrap is so wrong, it needs to be clear so you could inspect it, I wonder why it was rusty isn't the cable galvanised.

I remember a few flip lines failing in the states at the same point, I think they changed the way the ferrule was fitted to them.

Going out today to check mine and remove any black shrink wrap if mine is made like that.

The problem with the black shrink wrap is it holds moisture in which accelerate corrosion.

Exactly, moisture is absorbed by the rope covered section, including any corrosive saps or chemicals that are in solution, leaches by capillary action to this area where it remains long after the rest has dried out, hence more corrosion at this point.

Dave worked for me for nigh on 7 years, indeed he started his tree surgery career working for me; I've known him for a long time and found it really rather distressing watching that last night even though I knew the outcome.

 

It does raise a rather interesting point about the plastic covers over sewn and spliced areas of rope though; had a bit of a tool box chat at the yard about the subject at the end of play today.
