Olive oil & water 50/50 shaken together & poured over an old tea towel then wipe the slate... We use it on the slate tiles around the fire... Stays dark for a long time...

when we got our hearth for our fireplace it came from a lab in a chemical plant and had acid rings on it so we put a belt sander on it and it came up spot on with the fine belts

I use wet and dry abrasive. The grade depends on how much %hite is on it. Work your way through to fine grade and keep a nice wet slurry going. On flat surfaces use a block.
