Combo of both I think! The sink/gob cut looked a bit narrow and the tree is coming exactly where you want it but before it comes level with the ground sink/gob closes the hinge snaps and the weight of the tree takes it towards the fence. If the sink cut had been wider it would have come all the way down in line with the pull rope.

 

But either way tree down and little to no damage so jobs a good 'un !!

:sneaky2:Well spotted. Like you say, there is a swing towards the fence as the tension goes from the pull-line. and a very close finish...

I woulda used a bigger gob, when it closed the tree jumped towards the fence, well from what I can see.

 

Still a good call though and tbh I wouldnt have liked to fell it without a good winch or a strong pull.

There needed to be a little allowance for the crank of the trunk at the top, the hinge looked to be running in line with the fence where is should have been kicked away slightly.

After watching it for the third time, i had to agree that luck played a part. I think that the twist toward the fence was the weight of that timber at the top, i reckon without that it would have come down straighter.

I would have cut lower with a MUCH BIGGER gob.

Cheers guys i hear wot your sayin about a bigger gob but there was a great big hole in one side of the tree and i wanted to try and leave as much sound wood as possible to use for the hinge. I like the idea of usin the butress roots to hold it though steve.
