From Arb to forestry

I know it's not easy, I admit I am, as most climbers, an adrenalin junky. Just fuckibg fed up with neighbours, council HSE wankers and people constantly moaning while your trying to make a living. I did a job opposite a school last week, they didn't like 6 large ash trees coming down so did anything to stop us. HSE got involved, couldn't fault us apart from one question.....how are you going to control dust as dust could go in the children's eyes! Dust for **** sake! I said they could blink. Didn't go down well.

 

Maybe just crack on with arb but being in the middle of no where with no hassle from the public sounds appealing

 

Footpaths,gamekeepers,up to your axles in mud,clueless agents,non paying mills,bird season,badger setts etc etc etc,far from hassle free,very little is these days

You gotta weigh up what you want from life. Wood work doesn't have to involve much kit or expense, but then don't expect to pay a massive mortgage or fly business class (or even fly, ever again). Aim to specialise in something, become a master of that skill. You may find greater happiness in that than in chasing cash.

Forestry and Farming are also now full of hassle from office based non practical people these times. A MOD vehicle is not the best to use in the woods to remove trees. Worth doing both to see which suits better. Alternative is to purchase a mixed species woodland?

If you've already got the truck and some wood to go at, then what's the harm in giving it a go?

 

If you haven't then It's very easy to convince yourself it's a good idea.

 

If it was as easy as going and knocking a few big sticks over, delivering them and then gathering up the firewood on the way home, don't you think everyone would be doing it?

 

By the time you've bought the wood standing, there's the first big chunk gone out of what you're left with, then there's the cost involved in felling it, then getting it out, breakdowns/recovery/punctures, and then when the mill turn round and say they don't need it at the mo or X down the road's got some better for 10p a tonne cheaper etc etc.

 

Admitedly you're dealing with less numbers of people day to day, but there's still some that will try and make it hard work for you.

 

If you really want to give it a go, then why not, but if it were me I'd hang on to the Arb stuff for a while til I was sure.
