We used 3 gallons of water to keep the flames at bay while we cooked those kebabs!

The last pic is when we stopped the water and used the flames to "clean" the griddle plate. It cracked!

I have made a few with a vertical log splitter with stringy wood. Just split nearly through and then put a thin piece of kindle in to hold the split open. Much quicker than sawing, works just as well just not as pretty

I push a bit of firelighter down the middle as far as practical, works for me.

These things are proper simple and cheap to make that you should just go for it and find out for yourselves.

Your kids will love it. (or you will if you don't have kids)

 

I measured the ones i made on the sawbench and the kerf is 6mm compared to 8mm with chainsaw. It will work just fine.

Just do an extra cut or two if it doesn't, it's fun to find these things out for yourselves anyway.

If you've got the choice - knots near the base. That way you'll not be going through them during cutting. As to lighting, either poke a firefighter in near the top and light that. Or place a feather stick/birch bark/tinder on top at the candle's centre. As it catches and reduces in size but rises in heat, it'll drop down and start the burn from the bottom of the kerfs.

Cheers, I know I'm over thinking it but don't want to cut 100 logs only to find there was a better way of doing it.
