not @ all you should be able to judge what needs taking off after a lot off yrs you will find it come on its own :001_smile:

I don't see the point myself, just do the cutters first, i can judge how much needs to come off before or after, i can also not damage the freshly sharpened cutters with a flat file.

Cutters 1st, rakers last every time the only reason is thats the way I was taught and its now a habit. I always use guides (rollers) for sharpening, and a gauge for the depths. The depth gauge ensures consistency for each cutter, I know very few people who are so even-handed with filing to get it spot on every time, and the depth gauge will protect the freshly sharpened cutters. Sharpening free-hand is something i will only do as a touch up in the field, I always use guides in the workshop, and a vice for stability.

Cutters first, then rakers every time.

I do it by eye.

Following damage from metal or whatever and the chain needs resetting, I will use a depth gauge.

The key to fast cutting and low vibes however is the profile of the raker - make them rounded and smooth. :001_smile:

This is something I used to overlook, until someone pointed it out, just flattening the raker will make it bounce in the cut, causing vibes.
