I've been climbing a year now and just bought my second rope. My first one still has some life in it but I recon first year of climbing is going to be about as tough on a rope as it gets.... After all, as you gain experience you learn to preserve your kit.

Bought an 11.7 mm rope now to use with a zigzag and friction saver so hopefully it'll last longer.

thanks for replies, kinda what i thought life span wise, funny tho once you retire them their true strength becomes apparent when you pull over trees, unbog vehicles etc, nice to know what a massive safety factor they have, that said i must still get a new one, cougar blue me thinks:thumbup1:

UV ( ultra violet ) light is one of the biggest things to weaken ropes , without obvious damage , I always keep mine in a bag when dry and not in use . Like others have said they are very far over spec for weight to be carried ( I am 70 KG ) and rope strength from new .. circa 1500 KG ? ... also when using old rope for pulling etc you realise how strong it is !! Has any one ever known or heard of a rope breaking in use ?

Not in climbing use but I broke a piece of worn tachyon with relatively little force doing a little snatch winching. I was quite surprised how easily it let go despite visibly seeming climb worthy, though it had received some abuse previously. It reinforced to me the point in knowing the history of your ppe.
