The Common Agricultural Policy only came about in 1962. I never knew that people in Britain were starving before that date?

 

If Britain never starved in 1939-45 when the U boats were sinking shipping I honestly think we wouldn't starve if they got rid of the CAP....

People did'nt starve then due to rationing! Hedgerow and woodland were ripped up to increase the available productive land and people were encouraged to dig up their gardens and grow there own vegetables, the UK is currently only 60% self sufficent in food, meaning that if we had no imports the country would only have enough food for 219 days. The problem is that back during the second world war people still spent around 40% of their income on food whereas today it is something like 15% as they want it cheap as possible so they can spend thier money on other things.

All true- but I think the 60% figure could be hugely increased if a) people ate less meat (im not saying that in a hippy way, but its a fact) and b) if not so much was wasted.

I agree with you. I also think that if we reduced the amount of golf courses/ horses etc we could produce a lot more food.

I can't agree with a), being a beef and sheep farmer but I do agree with b), sell by dates and use by dates and a lack of common sense and the blame culture all come together to cause the amount of waste, heard something earlier think it was something like 129 million tonnes of usable food wasted every year in UK, not to mention all the waste from all the plastic and polystyrene packaging on everything

Yes and what with these housing estates popping up all over the place on prime agricultural land im sure we will become even more dependent on imported food. I love how this thread has totally derailed:laugh1:

Id have though all the more reason to agree with me! surely if people ate less meat (it was more of a premium product as opposed to a nessecity) then more value would be placed on the animal and it would be a case of farming for quality as opposed to quantity?

Rather like this, would you prefer to do 6 jobs in a day and get £20 each for them or 3 jobs and get £40. Meat will never die out, but these super cheap deals in supermarkets '3 packets of meat for a £10' aren't really doing anyone favours. I think meat should almost be a luxury item really (within reason, im not saying food for the rich!) but if people ate less of the poor quality intensively farmed meat they could afford the decent stuff, just less often.

Just my thoughts.

I've started ferreting this season and I'm amazed how hard it is to give away rabbits! My old nan who lived through 2 world wars would tan their arses.

All comes down to the fact that food is cheap.

Great bit o derailing, no ones mentioned the arable bein used to grow crops to go straight into waste digesters surely the land better used for edible crops/livestock.
