So.............literally after taking off the Treemotion, in swoops this little beauty and inspects my work. It then proceeds to dart down infront of my feet & pluck a tasty morsal before retreating to it's feeding perch to dismember it's furry little treat.

All apparantly without a care in the world and not even a wee thankyou for refraining from felling his habitual hang out :001_smile:

VVGood!....what a interesting rewarding days work and great photos.

I am not a hardcore birdie person but placing my bets on a male Kestrel?

Also generally what mulches are you using on such jobs?

And what camera are you sporting at the moment?

Cheers Steve

Cheers fellas, I absolutely love this work and feel compelled to share the visual. Glad you all like the shots.

The Kestrels' appearance, immeadiately after working on the Tree, reaffirms for me; why the remit I have here in our little North London urban Open Space, is essential.

This particular Tree has been host for hundreds of generations of Kestrels for eons.

The species may not be rare, but the dwindling habitat that falls victim of sometimes needless chainsaw action, is.

Our mulch would generally be composting desiduous woodchip.

I was fortunate to be at the very recent TEP seminar on Soil Roots & Fungi, at the Linean Societys' lecture hall (very cool location)

Amongst many other things, Olaf Ribeiro & Alan Rayner were talking around mulches, specifically about the need for the mulches to be replenished every two to three years and kept to a depth of no more than three inches. Also the ideal moisture content for Mulch is in the region of 35-40%.

This is ideal for the Mulch to be beneficial to the host Tree in warding off attack from the likes of Pythium/Phytothora and some pathnogenic fungi.

The camera is a Sony cybershot DSC-H50 has 9.1 mega pixels & 15x optical zoom.

Adequate for what I do, but nowhere near the hardwear I crave
