i've never heard of a prunus pear before

Ha ha! I thought that was what it was :blushing: - it's prunus something - I think has purple leaves?

 

 

Wood is very hard with very bright red spalting...

 

Ah - that which was formerly known as Prunus pissardi and is now known as Prunus cerasifera 'Pissardii'

Tis a small cooking pear. I am originally from Hull and know this pear. The Hazel pear is thought to be corruption of Hessle Pear. Hessle is a small town next to Hull,we pronounce it Hezzle.

Hessle Pears are common enough in East Yorkshire, and readily available. They were first recorded in 1827 and it is possible that they originated much earlier than this, but there is no proof that they came from Hessle.
