It's the ol suffix in poly-ol, it's an alcohol based ester, so will form hydrogen bonds with ethanol, this would also explain the claim of better lubrication, as it would have an electro-attraction to the metal surfaces (which requires a higher temperature to separate), so based on that, it's the better lubricant, but has a shorter lifespan once unsealed due to the hydrophilic nature of alcohols. As John is a full-time cutter, he won't get to see a problem develop, but a saw sat with fuel, or just the oily cylinder, have an increased risk of water-based corrosion.

Good post. I believe RL use PAO in the additive package in respect of hydroscopicity. Likewsie others use esters in the AP to add polarity. RLs straight grade race oils are pure POE whereas "street" oils have all the extras. Not a lot of top-fuel racing going on in the UK, Santa-Pod, hmm time I visited.

 

I find that RL is incredible in CI engines, the hydro issue is obviously greater in SI applications.

The long and the short of it is that you simply dont need all this fancy stuff in your saw, by all means use it, but Rock 2 stroke at £6.00 per litre is more than ample.

 

I have been supplying it to customers for 20 years without any issues. On this basis "you cant get better"

I did post grad in Diesel Exhaust Emissions at Plymouth, MSc Combustion & Emission Control at Leeds, IIE Mech Eng with Tribology and so on. Used to write for Diesel Car Magazine, spent 13 years in gas and oil business. Forgotten 90% of it now. Yea, sometimes I wonder WTF happened!

I wish pumps were labelled so we all know if they had ethanol and if so what %.

 

I believe it is fairly easy to measure the actual ethanol content in petrol yourself, by the method described here: How to measure the ethanol content of gasoline

 

As a side benefit, I would think it would be possible to actually separate the ethanol/water mixture from the pure petrol on a bigger scale, thereby "purifying" the petrol. Any thoughts on that?

 

(in any case, I will be sticking to Aspen/MotoMix Alkylate fuels, myself)
