The Pitfalls Of Importing !

Here, here!

I agree, importers have to show responsibility.

We have recently been inspected by FC Plant Health with a site visit to our warehouse to inspect all imported stock as have other importers I know. I know of one who had to burn a crate on site because the conifer timber the crate was made from was not kiln dried and had bark present.

problem with imports is what is going to come in on this wood. we had DED sudden oak ash die back what next if we allow are biosecurity to be nil.

coppicers are being pushed out of work due to imported hurdles and spars. are rubbish but cheap. its got to stop. and only timber imported is treated timber. same with trees use home grown not imported rant over

While not a huge fan of imported products, like you describe, I have to disagree: I used to make wattle hurdles but just couldn't get enough materials to keep up with demand and some blocks if coppice I brought back into rotation were then sold to someone else when they came good ( I was gutted but my fault really: no written agreement and a change of estate manager). Place near me bought in 'Eastern Bloc' hurdles and they were really good quality and cheaper than mine, but not by much.

Also thatcher friend of mine stopped makin his own brorches (family growin) and bought em in from somewhere in West Country: 2000 imported 2000 uk as a trial The imported ones were evenly cleft, pre bent, ready for the roof whereas the dearer uk ones had lots of thin spots, needed a good 2 day soak and still split when he bent them which do you think he stuck with? Havin said all this I totally agree about the pathogen threat.

John, Unfortunately many folk are ready to put the boot in if it is imported without a just reason. Like your imported hurdles the Latvian firewood i import cannot be beaten on quality or price, believe me if anyone wants to supply me with the same quality at the same price with homegrown firewood I will happily sign up a contract with them .

What is the price and quality you're looking for and maybe someone on here can?

Always take up references on any potential new supplier. Go and see the product, measure its MC carefully. No UK reference then no deal in my book.

Lead time from the Baltic is about 2 weeks. Yes their is a bit of condensation in containers but the wood should be so intrinsically dry that this should be of no concern. A bit like a foggy couple of days.
